Workshop: Adding texture to clay

Sprigging, carving, water etching - these are just a few methods to personalize clay surfaces. We will cover a variety of techniques to add visual and tactile texture to the surfaces of your pottery in this short workshop as well as a quick demonstration on how to glaze or stain these surfaces once bisque fired. We will be working with damp and leather hard clay, tiles will be provided and you may bring pottery with you.

Dig deeper into wheel throwing as Instructors guide you towards making pottery that you can use everyday! Building upon basic skills, students continue to explore wheel throwing techniques including taller cylinders, pulling handles, refining rims and trimming. Students are encouraged to explore cup and bowl forms. Students will be introduced to basic glazing techniques. Students who have the basics down will begin to develop their skills towards more refined forms.

Class: Sculpting Tiny Food

Make your favorite foods from polymer clay! Designed for beginners, this workshop will focus on the basics of working with polymer clay. We will roll, pinch, cut, and texture the colorful clay and make tiny foods that might just make you hungry for the real deal! All materials will be provided, including instructions for how to harden your clay food in an oven after you get home.

 

Jenny Dowd is a full-time potter and artist. Fascinated by the relationship between collector and object, Jenny primarily works in clay to produce functional, quirky, interactive pieces that jive with place and person. Jenny and her husband, Sam, live in Prairie Grove where they co-own Dowd House Studios. They work under the watchful eye of studio cat, Merlin.

Hand building with slabs can be fast and fun, in this 6-week class we will learn the basics while pushing boundaries. We will learn the differences between hard slab and soft slab, as we make cylinders and boxes to start. Each technique can be whimsical or architectural, perfect for plant pots, boxes, and garden lanterns, etc. Decorating our slab creations will be just as fun - with bold colors and patterns using screen-printing and monotype techniques. Learn the difference between slip and underglaze as we mix and match these bold printing techniques.

In this 6-week class learn how to elevate and personalize your pottery with glaze techniques while building confidence in glaze application. We will cover application methods including: dipping, pouring, and brushing as well decoration methods including stains, glaze trailing, wax resist and latex resist patterns. We will provide blank extruded cylinders of multiple clay types, no need to bring or make bisque ware (unless you already have a pile of your work ready to go.) This class will also discuss common glaze flaws and how to avoid them.

This in-person class meets 3 Wednesday evenings, May 19, 26th and June 2nd from 6-9pm. Please check the Art Association website for safety information and precautions for COVID-19.

Tired of dunking your pottery in glazes with disappointing results? Instead of giving up, refine your technique! In this class we will take your work to another level, uniquely yours. From start to finish, learn new ways to apply cone 10 glaze as well as the achievement of beauty through pattern and simplicity. This class will focus on glazing, and students should bring bisque-ware that has been filling up your shelves or piling up at home. If you do not have bisqueware, pots will be available for experimentation. FIRING AND GLAZE INCLUDED IN CLASS COST.
